INDIA Knocked Out From NSG | Rajat Poonia

India's NSG bid stops because several members are not supporting new entrants who are not party to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty.

After a large debate on India's membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) Council is much-deserved, especially when it involves countries like China (which is sympathetic to Pakistan) and India, USA (which are anti-Pakistan). The situation here is complex. By the way most questions raised by China against India’s membership which was bad.

Why NSG membership is important for India --

*for Expansion of Nuclear power generation ::

India is keen to become a member of the NSG, apart from being stakeholders in the Wassenaar Agreement and Australia Group, to expand its nuclear power generation.
In fact, membership with the NSG will provide greater certainly and a legal grounding for India's nuclear regime, evoking greater confidence of countries that invest billions of dollars to set up ambitious nuclear power projects in India. Once that is achieved, India can see itself getting promoted to a batch of law-making nations rather than a much more subdued law-adhering nation.

*India interested for clean and green program India’s participation in the NSG will further strengthen nuclear non-proliferation and make global nuclear commerce more secure, Swarup said, adding it would advance energy security and make a difference to combating climate change.

Countries not supporting India :-
Seven countries — China, Brazil, Switzerland, Turkey, Austria, Ireland and New Zealand — are not supporting India’s induction into the 48-member group. Some member countries blocked the bid, citing that India is not part of the Nuclear Non-profileration Treaty. India, Pakistan, Israel and South Sudan have not signed the non-proliferation treaty (NPT).

Commenting on China's claim that India needs to sign the NPT first before joining the NSG, he says there is no contradiction between the NPT and India's closer engagement with the NSG.
Brazil supports India's bid for NSG but called for common criteria for all non-NPT states. It further states that New Delhi has by far a better nuclear proliferation record than Islamabad.

China has also averred that for non-NPT members some definite criteria should be evolved rather than granting country specific waivers. At other times, it has stated that Pakistan also has similar credentials to join the NSG; and that if India is admitted, Pakistan should also be admitted simultaneously. China has also maintained that there are several countries which have reservations about India’s membership of the NSG. Further, if only India were to be admitted, it would disturb the nuclear-arms balance in South Asia as India will engage in a massive nuclear weaponisation programme. Finally, China has stated that India's member-ship will ''jeopardise'' China's national interests and touch a ''raw nerve'' in Pakistan.

It's all politics which play by china and others. China can't see India's progress in technology and other fields. I think that's the biggest issue.
